I have the itch to buy these days and am really liking this TJ I found in Victoria. $10,000 CAD ($7, 000 USD) for a near perfect jeep with 189,000km ( 117, 439 miles).
Dumb idea? Its been on the market for a while I think. I am not usually a big used car guy, but I really love TJ’s and at that price, I could probably keep it well maintained.
It would be my winter car, but we see limited salt and snow here so I could keep it well upkept I think.

Personally, I’d rather sit on the cash then spend it on something expensive I don’t really need. We can ignore the fact that I might not have listened to my own advice on that.

If the frame is clean and it’s got the 4.0 that’s a very fair price . I love that blue too. I say go for it!
-F ull disclosure: I am completely biased when it comes to all inline six Jeeps.

I'd be dumping the Forte for it, so balance sheet wise, no change.

What did you get? When is the big reveal?

You should consider self-quarantine .

I’m baffled by the concept of not taking advantage of it during summer months with the top and doors off. “Winter car”. Put a hoist in your garage, get that top off, and enjoy life.

Ah, that’s fair. Don’t you already have two weekend cars as it is though? I know this is all hypothetical, but still.

If it do esn’ t have hidden structural rust or mechanical problems (failing transfer case, blown head gasket) It’s a great deal, I say go for it!

Yeah, that’s where the whole business case falls down.
Also insurance is around $2000 - $3000 per car per year here and you can’t bundle cars on a policy, I don’t see how I can work juggling coverage from car to car based on my whims of what I want to drive.
Unless I am willing to call my broker (also my employer) every day before I set out.

Seems quite cheap, could probably take it south of the border (once border crossings are allowed again) and flip it for a profit.

It wouldn’t be soley for winter, but it would be my winter car. I would temp insure it for weekends/adventures from time to time.
As pointed out be E90m3, this all kinda breaks down when the fact that I already have 2 fun cars I can’t afford to insure at the same time.
Basically, I am only financially able to insure two cars at any given time (around $5K a year) with temporary insurance on one more for sporadic drives.

Gotcha. My Jeep’s insurance is relatively cheap, and it’s my only vehicle, so I never consider that cost.

I’m debating what to do with a similar amount of savings.... Here are my current options:
1. Pay off the CX-5 so I can lower the insurance rate and then use the payment money t o double my mortgage payment.
2. Buy a 1992 Ford Festiva GTA imported from Japan
3 . Buy a tiny camper (Sunray 109S)
Decisions decisions...

I keep looking for the cheapest manual 4.0 TJ here. Least expensive I’ve found so far is $5900. The search has been on for me for a a while now.

I live in the worst place in North America to own a car. Seriously.
I mean, the Forte cost $10K but Costs $2300 a year to insure.

Seems like a good deal for a TJ, especially one that clean.
Personally I’m not a fan of the TJ purely based on the interior, it feels too modern and luxurious, yet super cheap and plasticy at the same time? The YJ though, I’d take one of those all day long, square headlight be damned.

I’ve read your posts and always do a double take why is this insurance thing so complex, now I understand. My 6 month total on 4 cars is $560, two of those cars have comprehensive with a $ 1,000 deductible .

I too have been looking at Jeeps recently, leaning heavily towards getting a TJ sometime this year . From w hat I’ve been seeing, t hat price there seems to be the going rate for TJs in similar condition .

With no physical damage cover at all the truck costs $1500 per year

My datsun with liability only is about $60/year. I’m thinking of classic car insurance for the datsun tho as if it damaged it would most likely be totaled.

Thats a steel if the frame is solid. And triple check that the frame is solid. And once you’ve finished the 3rd check, start the 4th. The Sahara gets you the rear Dana 44 which is a great upgrade over the 35 and usually commands about a 1k premium over keeps with the 35 if the seller knows what they have.

Not saying I'll buy it, but what exactly should I be looking for in terms of frame health? Just general rust?

That looks more fun than a Kia without A/C.

Yes. Hot spots are at each control arm mount front and rear and where the skid plate mounts. Check inside and out by feeling inside of all the access holes as they typically rust from the inside out. Bad frames on TJ’s are just so prevalent that you have to be diligent when buying, if you end up getting a bad one, they’re fixable, bit you’re looking at about 2k to have a shop install saf-t-caps.
Main a reas to look in the front.
Main areas to look in rear.
Yes, I know my rear main is leaky, it's a 4.0 what can you expect.

That’ s the thing with Jeep’s, when there’s a good deal on a good one, it’s gone in a hurry. So my best advice is to have money ready and be patient. It took 3 years to find mine and I feel like I over paid, but I could sell it today for more than I paid so I guess not. The Jeep market is just crazy.
